Basaltic Prisms
Basaltic Prisms Hello again, as in the previous post we will focus on nature and this time I will talk about rectangular prisms, one of the best adventures I have had and one of the best trips of my childhood. What Are Basaltic Prisms, Anyway? Basaltic prisms (or columnar basalt formations ) are natural rock structures that form when lava cools down slowly and cracks into regular geometric shapes. Most of the time, the result is a series of hexagonal columns , although sometimes you get pentagons or other polygons in the mix. It’s like nature just flexing its geometry muscles. How Do They Form? Here’s the short version (no geology degree needed): A volcano erupts. Lava flows and spreads out. It cools very slowly and evenly . As it cools, it shrinks and cracks – kinda like drying mud does. BOOM: Nature builds a giant 3D puzzle of perfectly shaped columns.
